Hi, I’m Alexis <3. I’m a transracial, domestic, and infant adoptee born in CA and raised in WA. This involved predominantly white spaces and a lot of time spent at church (IYKYK). I’ve had the unique experience of an open adoption, knowing my biological mother since infancy-”two sides to every coin” applies well to this one! However, I am grateful to know her, and recognize my privilege in this experience despite its painful complexities.
Growing up as a Black girl in a white family, I felt out of place, vulnerable, and isolated– a little black sheep, if you will (pun intended). Without racial mirroring or advocacy I adapted, fragmenting into more ‘digestible’ versions of myself to survive. Over time, I came to recognize the trauma and impact of this on my psyche, leading me to focus on education and advocacy.
Now, as an adoptee therapist, I support BIPOC adoptees in reclaiming their stories, finding their voice, and embracing and loving all parts of themselves. I work with adoptees of all ages and adoptive parents, creating a space where adoptees are centered and truly seen/safe/heard (S/O @bipocadoptees for this slogan). The adoptee community is where I’ve found solace and my deepest sense of belonging—it’s my home, truly where my heart is and I am forever beaming that I get to be in communion and my career simultaneously :*).
