Damon is the host of the “Who Am I Really?” podcast, where adopted people share their stories of adoption and their attempts to find their biological families. The show was born out of Damon sharing his adoption and reunion experiences and occasionally encountering other adoptees who shared their unique, sometimes troubling recount of their adoption journey. He believes in the power of storytelling to help change commonly accepted narratives about adoption and to share the truth of the adoption experience as told by the adopted people who have lived them. Over 15 seasons Damon has interviewed nearly 250 adoptees, capturing a wide spectrum of experiences, from challenging adoptions and incredible reunions to uplifting adoptions and unfortunate reunions.
In his autobiography, “Who Am I Really? – An Adoptee Memoir,” Damon chronicled his experiences as and adoptee, becoming an adoptive parent, and his emotions over the birth of his son, Seth. He speaks openly about the heartbreak of grappling with his adoptive mother’s mental illness while simultaneously balancing the joy of locating his birth mother working nearby in Washington, D.C. Damon’s reunion journey took an unexpected twist when he accidentally located his biological father via DNA testing at a time when he was not even searching for the man — and he wasn’t the person his birth mother identified.
