Lora was born, adopted and raised in Indiana. Her mother was already parenting her 3-year-old brother who has Down Syndrome. She made the difficult decision to relinquish Lora for adoption due to not having enough support from either father and managing the difficult task of caring for a special needs child in the 70’s.
Lora always knew she did not belong with her adoptive family and should not have been placed with them. At the age of 42 Lora estranged from her adoptive family. It gave her the freedom and space to continue her healing journey, which included legally changing her name back to her birth name Lora and her biological mother reclaiming her through adult adoption. For Lora the estrangement was a liberation, giving back her agency and power.
At the same time Lora experienced secondary rejection from her biological father, but reunited with paternal cousins and siblings. Her father eventually came around and they met once 6 months prior to his passing.
Lora now has a blog My Adoptee Truth and has self-published three illustrated books. Healing is hard work, but standing fully in the truth – our truth – is the only way through this difficult journey.
